Snow

A white cloth

of lace forms

as the gentle flakes

fall

Protecting

what lies

beneath,

Safety found under the soft

embrace of the snow.

For now,

it is a fun aunt

or mischievous uncle

waiting to tip

you upside down

or a parent

with time to spare

and a hand

to help

you build a snowman

It’s a voice, snug

and merry –

its quivers, turbulence

and breaking, absent for the day.

There’s an amnesty of animosity

Exasperations melted away

momentarily by the drifting snow.

But it’s only a flying visit.

This welcomed diversion

will soon be replaced

with danger signs

warnings,

hard work

and harsh words

once again,

like ice

waiting for the warmth

of the sunshine.

We all need a good snow day

from time to time,

I hear you say.
